HEAT PUMP BASICS
What you should know about heat pumps
What is a heat pump?
A heat pump is a high-efficiency system that heats and cools your home using electricity by transferring heat instead of generating it. In the winter, it pulls heat from the outside air to warm your home, and in the summer, it works like an air conditioner by removing heat from inside. This all-in-one approach offers year-round comfort while reducing energy use and lowering utility costs.
How do heat pumps work?
Heat pumps use advanced technology to efficiently move heat between the inside and outside of your home. Through a refrigerant cycle involving key components, the evaporator, compressor, condenser, and expansion valve, they extract heat from the air even in colder months, and transfer it indoors to warm your space. In the summer, the cycle reverses to remove heat from inside your home, cooling it efficiently. This balanced heating and cooling process delivers reliable comfort with minimal energy use.
Is a heat pump right for my home?
For most homes, a heat pump is a practical, energy-efficient choice for year-round comfort. Modern systems are designed to perform well across various climates and home types. By ensuring your home is well-insulated and the system is professionally installed, you can enjoy lower energy bills and reduced environmental impact. Whether you’re upgrading an older property or building new, heat pumps offer a versatile and sustainable heating and cooling solution suited for many households.

FAQs
Frequently Asked Heat Pump Questions
What is a Heat Pump?
A heat pump is an eco-friendly way to provide heating and cooling to your home without the use of fossil fuels. Powered by electricity, heat pumps use refrigerant to transfer heat from the outside air into your home during Coloradan winters. During the summer, a heat pump will reverse this operation to cool your home.
HVAC system primary source electric heat then back up auxiliary heat by way of electric strip heat or combustible gas furnace. When using a furnace as back up heat this is referred to as “dual fuel” and can be designed to run supplemental heat only 1-2 weeks out of the winter. Optimal system design can satisfy 100% heating demand during winter.
Heat pumps are air conditioners that use a reversing valve and switches the flow of refrigerant that converts the indoor cooling coil during the summer into an indoor warming coil during the winter. This is radiant heating so “wet heating” versus dry air so additional humidification is not required. The footprint of the system is the same as an air conditioner with an added component on the inside of the outdoor unit so same ductwork and controls.
For the best heat pump installation and repair services in Northern Colorado, Sandbox HVAC has the experience to handle anything related to heat pumps. This includes securing the best 2025 heat pump rebates and offering expert maintenance plans to maximize system performance over time.

How does a Heat Pump work?
Powered by electricity, a heat pump works by transferring heat from outside to inside using refrigerant. This is the same technology an air conditioner uses to transfer heat from inside to outside. During the summer, the system will automatically reverse the flow of refrigerant effectively cooling the home.
Heat pumps use the same compressor technology as air conditioners but include a reversing valve, which allows the system to switch the direction of refrigerant flow based on whether heating or cooling is needed. The heat pump utilizes the same indoor blower motor and outdoor fan motor to convert the refrigerant between vapor and liquid while maintaining temperature deltas that are reminiscent of air conditioning.
Heat pumps have a lower heating differential than traditional furnaces so expect supply air temps sub 100 degrees fahrenheit and not above like furnaces. Heat pumps operate contingent on outdoor ambient temperature. Depending on system design, heat pumps will go into defrost mode when the temperature outside is below the threshold where the compressor shuts off to protect the unit and the outdoor fan continues to operate until internal refrigerant pressure allows the system to operate normally.

We install and maintain a wide range of high-efficiency heat pumps, including variable speed and multi-speed models from top brands like Trane’s XV and XR series, featuring advanced TrueComfort™ technology.

Why isn't upfront pricing standard for new equipment in the HVAC industry?
In order to protect your investment, it is important to assess these variables to optimize your every dollar spent. Tailored not templated. While transparent pricing is important and Sandbox strives to provide clear itemized quotes, a one-size-fits-all price model doesn’t reflect the reality of high quality HVAC installation. We use well-established practices and decades of experience in both commercial and residential projects, along with advanced load calculation tools, to create a design that fits your home’s needs.
Are Heat Pumps more efficient?
High-efficiency gas furnaces operate at 90–99% fuel efficiency. But modern heat pumps can achieve efficiencies up to 400% thanks to refrigerant-based heat transfer and variable speed technology. Unlike combustion systems, which are limited by a maximum burn efficiency of 100%, heat pumps move heat rather than generate it. This makes modern heat pumps far more efficient in 2025.
Another key feature is variable speed technology, which functions like gears in a car; the more gears you have the smoother and more efficient the operation. Certain Trane branded equipment can have as many as 700 “gears” to choose from automatically, providing the most comfort, noise reduction and efficiency.
Modern heat pumps require less carbon gas or liquid petroleum consumption with designs that can satisfy outdoor ambient temperatures down to -15 degrees fahrenheit, perfect for places like the Coloradoan Front Range. New variable speed designs baked into all compressor, motor, and valve technology allow heat pumps to eliminate high ramps during startup and adjust with demand load to buffer full load demands. In essence, the advanced thermostatic control can buffer a 1-2 degree deadband where the system can maintain a steady cruise control – set it and forget it!

Difference between Standard and Hybrid Heat Pump systems?
A standard system refers to a gas furnace paired with an air conditioner (AC). A hybrid, typically called a “dual fuel”, system is a gas furnace paired with a heat pump. The heat pump works as your air conditioner (AC) and your primary heat source. When temperatures drop too low for the heat pump to operate efficiently, the gas furnace automatically kicks in as a backup heat source. These are fantastic systems for cold climates, and help provide confidence in having two forms of heating your home wrapped into one package.

What is a Ductless Heat Pump?
A ductless heat pump is often referred to as a “minisplit”. Said heat pump provides a way to add both heating and cooling to several rooms on different levels without the need to install ductwork. This is a great option for custom homes, offices, garages and shops – eliminating the need for costly remodeling. Homes with boilers make a great fit as this solution doesn’t require ducting in order to cool your home, and can even take the place as a primary heat source making a great fit for solar. Ductless systems are incredibly quiet and maintain an aesthetically pleasing look.
Ductless heat pumps are the same as split system heat pumps or air sourced heat pumps except they do not require ductwork. They are often found in new additions, garage conversions, and to control single zone problem areas of a whole thermal envelope. They can be installed in a single zone with one outdoor unit and one indoor unit. Furthermore, they can be installed multi-zone with one outdoor unit and multiple indoor units. Smaller outdoor units can be wall mounted to the exterior facade. Linehide is used to clean up installations with tucking in refrigerant lineset, electrical and condensate wiring behind weather resistant raceway that is paintable.

Are Heat Pumps good for cold weather areas like Northern Colorado?
Earlier design heat pumps used to struggle in cold climate conditions. Now, today’s heat pumps can provide the majority of winter heating on their own. They are capable of operating at elevations up to 8000’. Heat pumps are a perfect match for Colorado’s climate and are game changers for hi-efficiency gains when transitioning into the summer cooling season.
With the already arid climate environment of Colorado, modern heat pumps no longer remove as much moisture as traditional furnaces do, reducing the need for additional or supplemental humidification.. Homes from the 1990s and newer typically do not require much ductwork modifications where older homes may require minor or major upgrades.
At Sandbox HVAC, your highly rated local heat pump company in Fort Collins: we proudly serve the entire Front Range—including Denver, Broomfield, Greeley, Westminster, and surrounding areas—offering affordable maintenance and access to rebates that make upgrading your heating system easier than ever.
Will a Heat Pump save me money?
With rising prices for gas, liquid petroleum, and even pellets, the overall cost of ownership offers significant advantages—especially when combined with utility and local government rebates. Heap pumps have the capability of satisfying the entire thermal envelope in both heating and cooling season.
Heat pumps help homeowners reduce costs by enabling full electrification of their homes and have the potential to achieve complete self-sufficiency without relying on grid power. Eliminating gas usage allows removal of combustion air and exhaust vents, which helps seal the home against outside temperature infiltration and frees up space for additional solar panel installation when switching to an all-electric heat pump system.
What size Heat Pump to buy & what is LiDAR?
The right size for a heat pump depends on the size of the property square footage and volume. We also take age of home into consideration. Older homes tend to be draftier with more air infiltration, while newer homes are generally more airtight due to improved window designs and better insulation. Optimizing the load calculation of heat pump system design allows for dialing in the cycles per hour that reaches its life expectancy.
Oversizing a heat pump system can lead to short cycling, where the compressor frequently turns on and off. This repeated cycling places excessive strain on key components like compressors, motors, and electrical contactors, causing premature wear and potential failure over time. Undersizing a heat pump system also causes a decrease in life expectancy as this increases unnecessary longer run operating times.
Can a Heat Pump accommodate an entire house?
Heat pumps can heat an entire building through a central duct system or air distribution design. There are also ductless heat pump systems that can be installed for additions or problematic areas with poor airflow or underperforming equipment. Multi zone ductless heat pumps are available to allow for additional indoor units paired with a single outdoor unit.
These are instrumental in converting radiant gas heating or legacy electric strip heating systems where finished spaces have less invasive installation than installing an entire ductwork system and also more cost effective can install line hide on exterior facades to cover up refrigerant lines and hide electrical cables wiring that are weatherproof and paintable.
As a top-rated heat pump installer serving both commercial and residential clients in Northern Colorado, Sandbox HVAC offers affordable maintenance, repair, and installation services with rebates and incentives to make upgrading easier in 2025.
