Colorado is located in ‘Hail Alley’
If you’ve lived in Northern Colorado for very long, you know hailstorms are frequent and often times downright nasty. We frequently are asked about solar panels and hail damage, specifically, “Can solar panels be damaged by hail?” The short answer is this: not often! Solar panels are incredibly resistant to hail, and you don’t need to worry about the quality or longevity of your solar system in light of the wild weather we sometimes have in Northern Colorado.
In fact, the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) recently studied thousands of solar systems across the country and found out just how durable solar systems really are. This study looked at 50,000 solar energy systems implemented between the years 2009 and 2013 and found that as little as 0.1% of all residential and commercial solar systems have been reported as affected by weather each year. These incredible findings point to the ability of solar systems to last decades, even in hail storms.

Solar Panels and Hail Damage
The good news is you need not worry about solar panels and hail damage once the system is installed. That being said, if your roof has been damaged in one of the many recent hail storms we’ve had, now is a GREAT time to consider solar. You’ll already be getting work done to your roof, so you might as well go the extra mile to have a solar system installed as well. This will ensure that your roof is in top shape for the solar system and will make sure your roof lasts as long as possible.
If you already have a solar system installed and need help removing the solar system to repair the roof or reroof the building, don’t hesitate to contact Sandbox Solar. We offer removal and reinstallation of solar systems for your home or commercial business to make sure the process is done right and in a timely fashion. Contact us to learn more.
Sandbox Solar also offers a solar carport – available in any size from a single car carport to a full-sized commercial parking lot – that can help protect your vehicles from hail damage. Our solar systems are better suited to survive hail damage than your car is, meaning the investment of a solar carport can do more than just charging your car or home!
Despite the fact that hail is known to ruin gardens, windows, and cars – you need not worry about your solar panels and hail damage. Your solar panels are designed to last more than 25 years, hail and all.
