Sandbox Solar installed a heat pump and new gas furnace (dual-fuel setup) in our 80-year-old home. The installers, Tyler and Rowan, treated our home like it was their own. They were conscientious and professional and walked us through key decision points. We also needed significant electrical upgrades, and the electrical team, Wyatt and Alex, did an outstanding job working with the challenges of our older home. We are now considering the installation of a tankless water heater and intend to work with Sandbox Solar again.

The team from sandbox that did our solar panel installation was great. Wyatt let us know everything that was going to happen, and did the electric work on the ground. Tony and his team on the roof were fantastic. Tony even painted the conduit on the roof and the wall to match. It looks great.

Sandbox did a detach and reset for us in Boulder when we had our roof replaced (our original solar installer was no longer in business), they did a great job. Really nice group of people, professional, courteous, left everything in good shape. Showed us some squirrel damage we weren’t aware of that had taken a few panels out of service, we added critter guard as a result so we are less likely to have the issue going forward. Happy to recommend their work.

Sandbox Solar has gone above and beyond in every aspect of my solar project! Justin in sales had great communication and absolutely no pressure and explained each option with the pros and cons to each. Ryan on the electrical install crew and Bradly with the purple team who Indy talked the panels. Both Ryan and Bradley were respectful of my property and time, working around my schedule. When it comes time for the heat pump, Sandbox will be my company!

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT CENTRAL AIR CONDITIONING

WHAT IS CENTRAL AIR CONDITIONING?

Central air conditioning is a whole-home cooling system that uses ductwork to distribute conditioned air throughout your property. In a typical residential split system, an indoor evaporator coil removes heat from the air while an outdoor condenser releases that heat outside. When properly sized for your home, central AC provides consistent temperatures and efficient cooling from a single system.

HOW DOES CENTRAL AC WORK?

Central AC cools your home by circulating refrigerant between indoor and outdoor components. Warm indoor air is drawn through your ductwork and passed across the evaporator coil, where the refrigerant absorbs its heat. The cooled air is then distributed back throughout your home while the absorbed heat is carried to the outdoor condenser and released outside.

The system also removes some moisture from the air as it cools, with the resulting condensation safely directed to a drain or condensate pump.

IS CENTRAL AC RIGHT FOR MY HOME?

Central air conditioning is an excellent option for homes with existing ductwork or a forced-air heating system, such as a conventional furnace. Professional load calculations help determine the correct system size based on factors including your home’s square footage, insulation, windows, and local climate.

For properties without existing ductwork, a ductless AC system may be a more practical alternative. Our team can evaluate your home and help determine which cooling solution best fits your space, comfort needs, and existing HVAC system.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Central AC Questions

What is a central air conditioning (AC) system?

A centralized air conditioning system is an industry term referring to a conventional residential system. This style of system is intended to condition the entire home through your duct work. By having a single, properly sized system you’re able to provide consistent indoor temperatures and improved energy efficiency compared to room-by-room units.

How does a central air conditioning (AC) system work?

A central a/c works by pumping refrigerant through a set of coils to remove heat from the air. The air handler moves the hot air in the home through the ductwork and across the inside coil. The inside coil absorbs the heat, and the cooled air is redistributed throughout the rest of the home. The refrigerant transfers the heat that was absorbed at the indoor coil to the outdoor unit and is transferred to the outside air.

What is a packaged central AC unit (gas pack)?

This type of equipment is common in commercial and industrial applications. The a/c, furnace and air distribution assembly are all packed into one unit that is installed outside. The size of commercial and industrial applications demand a lot of output; By packaging it in 1 unit you don’t have excessively long lengths of refrigerant lines, gas lines and electrical runs. This method not only saves installation costs and space, it maintains optimal efficiency for such high demands.

How does a central heat pump system differ from central AC?

The only key difference between the two is the heat pump has the ability to reverse the direction of flow. A heat pump will cool your home the same way an a/c would. By adding a reversing valve the engineers were able to effectively change the direction of the heat transfer within one unit.

How often should central air conditioning be serviced, and what maintenance is needed?

It is recommended to perform annual service on your a/c unit. These maintenances include things like, cleaning the coils, stress testing electrical components and evaluating power draws. During these services, we will be able to address any potential concerns accordingly and provide customers with confidence in their system moving forward. By catching and correcting any imbalances, the system will avoid irreversible damage.

Is central air conditioning located inside or outside the home?

For residential applications, often referred to as a split system, the central AC has both indoor and outdoor components. As for commercial and industrial applications, the most common system is a package unit where all heating and cooling components are outside, contained in one singular assembly.

Can central air conditioning be added to a residential or commercial property?

Yes, you can add central air conditioning to your home if you already have an existing forced air heating system, such as a conventional furnace. Ductless air conditioning is a great alternative for homes without a forced air furnace.

Ductless AC systems provide energy-efficient cooling without requiring ductwork, making them an ideal solution for homes with baseboard heating or radiant heat systems. Whether you’re upgrading your HVAC system or looking for a cooling solution that works with your current setup, both central and ductless AC options offer comfort and efficiency for a cooler home.

What is central AC condensate and how does it impact my property?

Due to the AC coil inside getting so cold, the warm air that crosses it will condense the humidity. This accumulation of water will need to be directed to a drain. This could be routed to the floor drain, or re-directed elsewhere with a pump known as a condensation pump.

What is the typical lifespan of a central AC system?

With warranty, customers are guaranteed 10 years.
But realistically, with proper installation and maintenance, 20 years.

How do the evaporator coil and blower work together in central AC?

The evaporator coil is where the refrigerant is turned from liquid to vapor. The blower moves the warm air in the home across the evaporator. The rate of airflow and the flow of refrigerant through the metering device must be properly balanced to ensure efficient cooling and dehumidification.

What is a refrigerant line set in an AC system?

The refrigerant line set connects the outdoor condenser unit to the indoor evaporator coil in a split system. Refrigerant is transferred through copper piping. lineset can be reused in a system replacement. Using solvents, we are able to flush the inside of the lineset to ensure its clean and decontaminated.

Do central AC systems require ductwork?

Yes. central air requires the use of ductwork. The ductwork for the home is engineered to deliver specific amounts of conditioned air to each room in the home. Zoned duct systems typically serve limited areas, and can allow specific temperature control per zone.

What is the difference between zoned systems and whole-home cooling?

Zoned duct systems are duct systems that have dampers to stop or allow conditioned air to a specific portion of the home; all operating off one HVAC system. Each zone will have its own thermostat that all controls the same unit.

How does ductless AC compare to central AC?

Ductless AC systems, such as mini-splits, cool individual zones without using ducts, making them ideal for additions or rooms not connected to central ductwork. Due to safety and legal concerns, adding conditioned air to a garage via the existing ductwork is not allowed; this is another way ductless cooling stands out. Central AC, on the other hand, relies on a ducted system to distribute air from a single indoor unit throughout your home. While ductless systems offer zoning and flexibility, central AC is typically more effective for cooling the entire property.

How is cooling load calculated for central AC systems?

Cooling load refers to the amount of cooling required to maintain a comfortable indoor temperature. At sandbox HVAC+ we use a system known as Conduit Tech, this application uses LiDAR to precisely measure your home and calculates building materials to provide a manual J,S and D. Factors such as square footage, insulation, window design, and local climate are used to calculate the proper system size. Correct load calculation ensures efficient performance and avoids under- or over-sizing the central system.
