Is solar worth it in 2026? Why now is the time to switch

With incentives shifting and electricity rates climbing, Colorado homeowners are now switching to solar to own their power and build a reliable home microgrid.

Why Make the Switch

The New Era of Energy Independence

Sandbox+ Solar is committed to providing self-sufficient solutions to homeowners across the Front Range. Our solar installers can help you accomplish this through the power of solar energy. But you might be asking: “Is solar worth it in 2026?” It’s an understandable question, especially if you are new to the topic. Solar isn’t just about being eco-efficient. It’s about owning your power and creating a microgrid you and your family can rely on no matter what.

The History

Throughout the 1900s, the United States developed and expanded the utility grid so homes and businesses can have access to reliable energy usage. It wasn’t until the late 1900s and early 2000s when we started to experience blackouts in multiple states due to line failures. That’s when more investments into continuous grid provisions started to ensure communities had access to a more modern and reliable system moving forward.

Today’s Challenges

As we moved into the 2020s, we started to see lapses in grid technology that is making it hard to keep up with improvements for long term viability. Even though utility companies are still making efforts to keep up with updates due to the demand on the grid, it still calls into question how much of a liability it is becoming. Today, renewable energy is becoming vital for taking stress off of the grid.

Aged Infrastructure

Decades-old systems are still in place throughout the grid. They are more prone to failure and aren’t as efficient to keep up with the demands of modern electricity usage.

Surging Energy Demand

Widespread electrification and AI data centers are putting pressure on the existing infrastructure and straining supply capabilities to an extent never seen before.

Climate and Weather

Severe weather, especially in Colorado, is causing utility shutdowns in order to prevent utility line breaks starting wildfires but it still leaves your home vulnerable.

Benefits of Solar

Solar Panels Pay for Themselves

A major upfront investment as a homeowner can feel overwhelming, but it doesn’t have to be. We’re here to show you exactly why a residential PV system is worth it and how it can set you up for the future.

Solar panels are one of the few home improvement projects that start paying you back the second they are turned on! As soon as our solar installers complete your system and it passes inspections and has permission to operate, you can unlock the benefits immediately. Plus, PV system installations increase the value of your home anywhere from 3% to 7%. So, if you sell your home you will see a greater return on your investment.

Even if you wait five years to get solar you could be missing out on about $6,000. 2026 is the perfect time to make the switch to renewable energy; especially considering utility bills are projected to continue to increase by at least 6% annually depending on the utility company you are connected to.

Monthly Expense to Long-Term Asset

A solar panel installation isn’t just about a bill swap; it’s a strategic move into an investment where you can stop renting and start owning your energy. When you own your energy you can gain self-sufficiency so you don’t have to rely on an overstressed grid. These systems provide high-efficiency production to give your home the power it needs to run while drastically reducing your monthly expenses.

Although you would still need to pay a small fee for a solar installation with a grid-tied connection, you are still saving money each month. That’s not to mention the amount of money you will save in an extended period of time. PV systems are engineered to last anywhere from 25 to 30 years with the right equipment and maintenance so your long term investment is likely to be worth the upfront costs.

Understanding Grid-Tied Solar Panels

We know what you’re thinking: “why would I still need to pay the utility company if I install solar?” It’s a valid question. But it also makes sense. A grid-tied PV system simply means your panels are connected to the grid so you have a backup power source. This ensures you have access to energy in case your system doesn’t produce enough electricity so you aren’t left in the dark on cloudy days or during the night. Essentially you’re paying for the on-demand availability of grid provided electricity instead of all the power you consume.

With a grid-tied system, there is typically a standard connection fee that doesn’t fluctuate for infrastructure maintenance and metering. However, there may be other factors that influence the monthly amount like energy demand, time-of-use, seasonal pricing, and solar credits.

An Inside Look at Net Metering

Net metering is the system that tracks the power you pull from and send to the grid. When you generate excess power you don’t use, it puts the meter in reverse so it can flow to the grid. This gives you credit if your grid energy usage is lower than the energy you sent. Basically, the system is set up so you can access electricity from the grid if you need to while offsetting the costs with your credits.

On the other hand, you could also invest in a battery energy storage system to hold onto excess energy instead of it being sent straight to the grid. That way you have a backup system in place in the event of an emergency or to use your own, owned energy at night instead of pulling more from the grid right away.

Sandbox Solar installed a heat pump and new gas furnace (dual-fuel setup) in our 80-year-old home. The installers, Tyler and Rowan, treated our home like it was their own. They were conscientious and professional and walked us through key decision points. We also needed significant electrical upgrades, and the electrical team, Wyatt and Alex, did an outstanding job working with the challenges of our older home. We are now considering the installation of a tankless water heater and intend to work with Sandbox Solar again.

The team from sandbox that did our solar panel installation was great. Wyatt let us know everything that was going to happen, and did the electric work on the ground. Tony and his team on the roof were fantastic. Tony even painted the conduit on the roof and the wall to match. It looks great.

Sandbox did a detach and reset for us in Boulder when we had our roof replaced (our original solar installer was no longer in business), they did a great job. Really nice group of people, professional, courteous, left everything in good shape. Showed us some squirrel damage we weren’t aware of that had taken a few panels out of service, we added critter guard as a result so we are less likely to have the issue going forward. Happy to recommend their work.

Sandbox Solar has gone above and beyond in every aspect of my solar project! Justin in sales had great communication and absolutely no pressure and explained each option with the pros and cons to each. Ryan on the electrical install crew and Bradly with the purple team who Indy talked the panels. Both Ryan and Bradley were respectful of my property and time, working around my schedule. When it comes time for the heat pump, Sandbox will be my company!
